What Is Aesthetics?
Aesthetics is the professional study and practice of skin health, appearance enhancement, and non-medical cosmetic treatments. It is a regulated discipline grounded in skin science, hygiene, client safety, and ethical care. Aesthetics focuses on maintaining and improving the condition of the skin through preventative care, corrective treatments, and education—rather than medical diagnosis or surgical intervention.

Unlike informal beauty practices, aesthetics requires formal education and licensing. A trained aesthetician understands skin function, ingredient interaction, environmental influence, and professional boundaries.

The Role of the Aesthetician
An aesthetician is a licensed skin professional whose role is to support healthy skin through safe, evidence-based, non-invasive treatments. Responsibilities include skin analysis, consultation, treatment planning, client education, infection control, and ethical conduct.

Aesthetics vs Other Fields

  • Aesthetics: Skin care and non-invasive treatments

  • Cosmetology: Hair, nails, makeup, and general beauty services

  • Medical Practice: Diagnosis, prescription medications, invasive procedures

Understanding scope protects the client, the practitioner, and the institution.

Section Summary
Aesthetics is a science-based profession centered on skin health, safety, and education. Understanding the role and scope of the aesthetician is the foundation of ethical professional practice.
